Lack of Vitamin D worsen asthma

People with asthma who are deficient in vitamin D will experience a worsening of asthma. Deficiency is thought to inhibit the response to steroid treatment is often used in asthma controller and reliever medications.

In his research, researchers at National Jewish Health (NJH) in Denver to measure vitamin D levels of 50 patients with asthma and to assess lung function, bronchial hyperreactivity, which occurs frequently in the contraction of airway , and response to steroid treatment.

Apparently, patients with vitamin D deficiency have shown poor results in the examination of lung function and bronchial hyperreactivity. Furthermore, patients with levels of vitamin D in their bodies below 30 nanograms / ml levels bronchial almost doubled compared to those who have more vitamin D in their blood.

Low vitamin D levels are also associated with poorer response to treatment with steroids and increased production of proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-alpha. It raises the possibility that low vitamin D levels associated with airway inflammation increased, the researchers said.

In addition, vitamin D levels predict how a person will respond to steroid treatment against asthma. ”This can happen because of the vitamin D acts as a modifier of steroid response in a way that is consistent with people with asthma,” says Dr. E. Rand Sutherland, the division of medical pulmonary NJH and critical.

Participants have the most serious levels of vitamin D is low, they said. Asthma linked to obesity and lack of vitamin D may be a factor linking the two conditions, said Sutherland.

“Restoring normal levels of vitamin D in people with asthma can help improve their asthma,” says Sutherland. However, it is unclear whether vitamin D is to help people with asthma, he said.

Vitamin D recommended for adults is 300 IU to 600 IU, depending on age, Institutes of U. S. National Health.
